Crafting Potions in DnD 5e Potions are magical items; we've established this through both our assumptions and corroborated it with the DMG. While there are not specific brewing rules, the same creation rules that apply for any magical item are in effect when creating a potion. See, in the Dungeon Master's Guide it states on page 129 that: a character might need alchemist's supplies to brew a particular potion. Well, last time I checked a potion of healing is a particular potion. Though, Xanathar's Guide to Everything on page 79 and 82 states.
- Nov 29, 2014 The 5e DMG scavenged the good bits from earlier editions. If you own them, much of the information isn't new but at least it's all in one book. If you don't, you don't need to buy them. EDIT: Many of the variant rules read like Dragon Magazine articles that added little options here and there.
- A list of Tables in the DMG and their Page Number.
From D&D Wiki
(page 153) under the description of a healing potion they say it is a vial, and on the same page they have a chart for container capacity that says a vial is 4 ounces. Hope that helps, but DMs may also vary the size, shape, and any other details of healing potions. May 26, 2015 Random Tables of the Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide. By Mike Shea on 26 May 2015. The 5th Edition Dungeon Master's Guide is packed with useful information for your 5e Dungeons and Dragons game. One of its most useful features is the huge amount of random tables. DnD 5e Player Handbook. I love D&D 5e! For all its virtues though, it gets a lot of flak in some communities for not having enough random tables and set DCs for tasks. Mishaps (DMG 140) Mixing Potions; Failing to Cast a Spell From a Scroll; Magic Item Tables (DMG 144-149) History, Properties, Details, Quirks of Magic Items (DMG 142-143) Sentient Magic Items (DMG. Although both crafting on p.187 (PHB) and magic crafting on p.128 (DMG) talks about 'special materals or locations' needed to craft certain items. But it's up to the DM. I added Ability checks on some potions to check for mishaps. If you fail your check to make greater healing potion you just get a normal healing potion.
This equipment assumes the use of the Spell Points variant rule (DMG pg. 288), or equivalent.Source |

Informally known as a 'green potion' due to its color, a potion of magic is used to restore magic points. You can drink this potion as an action. Drinking it causes you regain a number expended magic points based on the potion's rarity, as shown in the following table. Once you have regained magic points with a potion of magic, you must complete a long rest before you can again regain magic points with a potion.

@JeremyECrawford Are Potions of Healing Magic or Mundane items in terms of 5e crafting?
— tony (@perception101) December 6, 2016
A potion of healing is magical. See the first sentence of its description (PH, 153). #DnDhttps://t.co/2615ihJoDK
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) December 6, 2016
@Mazoshi1987But that means only casters can create them even though phb states you can make them with a herbalist kit? I'm curious, where do you interpret the PH saying that an herbalism kit gives you the ability to make a potion of healing?
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) December 6, 2016
@perception101@Mazoshi1987but I guess you're going to say, required, but not sufficient – which clears up a LOT of confusion 🙂 Bingo. The kit is required but not sufficient.
— Jeremy Crawford (@JeremyECrawford) December 6, 2016
@perception101@Mazoshi1987 Cool, thanks. Funny what you can read into a single sentence (along with half of reddit it seems). There are many phantom rules on the loose online.

@perception101@Mazoshi1987aye, but the flipside is we can now clear stuff up in real time! Appreciate you taking the time for this. My pleasure!

@JeremyECrawford WAit, shit, I just got around to checking the DMG. Kinda sad that Healing Potions are always made at a loss.

As of the DMG errata, potions and other consumable magic items cost half as much to make: https://t.co/kuNYh24QEY#DnDhttps://t.co/8BE2q1RBfJ
